Filling Out the Death Certificate
LINE 40
MANNER OF DEATH
| In cases of accidental death, this information
may be used to justify the payment of double indemnity on life insurance
policies. It is also used to obtain a more accurate determination of cause
of death
. Complete this item for all deaths. Mark the box corresponding to the manner of death. Deaths not due to external causes should be identified as “Natural.” These are usually the only types of deaths an attending physician will certify. (See item 35.) In cases where the immediate cause of death cannot be determined, or
the cause of death is pending investigation, the appropriate block should
be marked and the certificate should be filed immediately. Upon determination
of the cause of death, an Amendment to Medical Certification of Certificate
of Death should be filed by the physician, Justice of the Peace/Coroner,
or Medical Examiner who originally certified the death.
