This line helps in the identification of the decedent. It is also used in research and statistical analysis to determine sex-specific mortality rates and differences between males and females in causes of death. 

Enter male or female. Do not abbreviate or use other symbols. 

If sex cannot be determined after verification with medical records, inspection of the body or other sources, enter “UNK” for Unknown. Do not leave this item blank.
