hyperstudio

New instructional tools can lead teachers into new roles that are necessary to train future leaders. One such tool is HyperStudio. What is HyperStudio? The American Heritage Dictionary defines:

  • Hyper to mean over, above, beyond, and exceeding.
  • A“studio” as an artist’s workroom, a photographer’s establishment, a place where art is taught or studied, a room for movie, television, or radio production, or a room where tapes and records are produced.
Therefore, HyperStudio implies the ultimate creative environment in which media can be used and combined in all of its forms. In addition, HyperStudio is a method of designing textual, sound, graphics, movies, animation that can be linked in a nonlinear way (conventional media such as books are linear or sequential). Hypertext/media, or hypermedia encourages students to cut their own trails through the information presented.

HyperStudio should not be a once-in-a-while frill in the classroom but it should be given the same importance as handwritten reports, worksheets, or tests. In fact, as we move into the 21st century, it should take a far greater role than any of the current assessment tools as a means of integrating and enhancing curriculum. It will be your job as a facilitator to develop meaningful ways to incorporate HyperStudio into curriculum projects that are not only worthwhile but worth doing. This type of curriculum planning allows students to take ownership for their own learning.
