Resizing and Converting Graphic Files

Resizing a graphic file means to change the actual size of the picture viewed in that graphic file. We use the software application, GraphicConverter (shareware), in the lab to do this task because it can also trim any excess white space with on instrction. This can be done in Paint but is very clumsy..

1) Open Graphic Converter.
2) Use File-Open command from the menu bar to browse through your disk to find the picture you want to resize. Choose the picture and click OK.
3) Use Picture-Size-Scale to call up the dialog box that allows you to choose sizes.
4) Change the width approximately 50% and the rest of the measurements will alter their numbers automatically for you. Click OK.
5) If any white space still shows around the picture use Edit-Trim existing (options).

To convert a graphic file to a different format means to change the file from a .tiff or a .pic or .bmp to a usable format for our purposes in this class. We use.jpg or .jpeg for photographs and scanned pictures and .gif for draw pictures or pictures with large chunks of color.

1) Open GraphicConverter.
2) Use File-Open to browse through your disk space to find the picture that you wish to alter. Choose the picture to be converted and click OK.
3) Use File-Save As.
4) Choose an appropriate name (preferably no longer than 8, lower-case letters/numbers) but leave the extension attached to the name.
5) Choose the format as .jpeg/.jpg if your picture is a photograph or scan and .gif if your picture is a cartoon, drawn picture, or line drawing. Click OK.
6) When you choose .jpeg/.jpg, an additional dialog box comes up asking you to adjust the quality of the picture to be saved. Normally, the dedault setting is satisfactory but make alterations if you like and then click Save.
7) The file will be saved in the proper format.
