As the volume of data in our society grows, the need to know how to locate important information quickly increases. Students need to understand concepts related to handling information to solve problems and do research electronically. To accomplish this, they must locate the right kind of information and organize it in ways to draw relationships between isolated elements. One way to achieve finding pertinent facts is to have students use a database. A database is an electronic method of creating, organizing, manipulating, storing, and retrieving information. The primary function of a database is to store facts in a way that makes it easy to locate later.


A database offer students and teachers several kinds of capabilities they could not use with information stored on paper, in file folders, in filing cabinets, or in books. You can use this application to prepare classroom materials, organize student information, inventory instructional resources, teach research and study skills, or pose and test hypotheses. Teachers have long recognized the unique capabilities of database software to support instruction in problem solving, research skills, and information management as well as higher level concepts such as classification and keyword searching. In many cases, a database can generate an information “picture” that may not be visible in other ways for students to analyze.

Data entry skills have been completed by filling out the Student Information Form plus collecting the information for the “Lesson on the 50 states” from the World Wide Web. Searching techniques have been developed by using the World Wide Web to find data for your unit. This module discusses the creation of the database structure and exhibits ways to manage the data.

Prerequisite Computer skill
Be sure you feel comfortable with the skills required to use AppleWorks Draw.

Practice Application: Be able to identify parts of a database: (file, record, field), plus the concepts of sort (arrange), search (find), and report data in various forms. Demonstrate your ability to handle the two components of database production, creating the database structure and entering the data. If you are having problems, use the tutorials on the right, submit questions to the TeachNet 371 Questions folder, or contact your instructor for a one-on-one session.

Database (DB) Skills needed for this module:
Locate and open AppleWorks database document. Merge database records into one file.
Design/create a simple database structure. Add, delete, and edit fields
Create special fields such as value list, multimedia, etc. Select, copy and paste, duplicate, and move data.
Build data entry skills - adding, deleting, and editing data Sort records.
Design and create labels and report layouts Establish search strategies and techniques
Combine smaller databases together to form one large database Show difference between clipart used in a reort and a multimedia field.

When you feel competent in each area, do the required application and submit it to the Dropbox.
