Cooperative
Learning in Distance Education
This article
provides various techniques with informal cooperative learning groups. Informal
cooperative learning groups are temporary, ad hoc groups designed to last for
only one discussion or class meeting. The techniques include Focus Discussion,
Question/Answer Pairs, Progress Checks, Intermittent Pair Discussion, Cooperative
Note-Taking Pairs, Read and Explain Pairs, Peer Feedback Groups, and Inductive
Teaching.
Cooperative Learning in Technical Courses
This article
outlines several cooperative learning exercises that have worked particularly
well in engineering courses and then suggests ways to maximize the benefits
of the approach and to deal with the difficulties that may arise when CL is
implemented. The exercises range from short questions to extensive problem-solving
activities in a variety of categories. In addition, several suggestions for
setting up CL groups and structuring assignments are provided.
